Recruiting for the Apocalypse [#HRforAll Halloween Twitter Chat]

Have you ever noticed that recruiting is the only HR function that isn’t focused on the team or larger organization? In fact, much of recruiting is spent looking for individual super star, purple squirrels with a ton of experience doing exactly what we think we need, who lives near our office, and will accept our lousy pay. It’s so focused on finding that right individual that we often neglect to see the big picture and focus on building up a functional team.

Lately, I’ve published several articles about the problem with that, including Stop Hiring Individuals. Start Hiring Team Members. and The Leadership Lie: Why and How to Recruit Followers on ERE, as well as coauthored Top 10 Tips for Building the Best Teams and Should You Hire Great People or Great Teams? with TRAP Recruiter’s, Keirsten Greggs.

Considering the current state of affairs and the upcoming Halloween holiday, Cory Kapner and I will be joined by our friend Keirsten to talk about Recruiting for the Apocalypse.

Things to think about during this chat, like in your own organizations, you’ll want to build an amazing team. You’ll need the right people with complimentary skills, who you can trust, and the right tools to help you get what you need done.

With that, here’s what to expect from the chat.

The Questions

  • The end is near, take 3 recruiting tools with you, what would they be?
  • Oh no! The lifeboat can only hold one other to help you recruit, who is that person and why?
  • The USA is underwater, what country would you move to and why?
  • And yes, you have to recruit! The radio only has one station, what is the only channel you need for recruiting news?
  • The lifeboat is too heavy! If you had to get rid of one tool, what would it be?
  • Civilization has to start over, if you had to start from scratch without LinkedIn, where would you start?
  • If we do make it to Mars, what is different about recruitment 50 years from now?

The Rules of a Twitter Chat

In case you need some reminding, a Twitter chat is a LIVE chat that takes place on Twitter. People “gather” at a certain day and time to talk about a certain topic. There is usually one or two people who moderate or host the chat, who post questions to guide the conversation.

Questions are all marked with a Q and labeled with numbers to help everyone keep track of the flow of the conversation. People responding to questions should mark their answers with an A and the corresponding number.

For example, the moderators/ hosts will post “Q1” and everyone will answer with tweets marked “A1.”Additionally, all Tweets – both questions and answers – will use the hashtag #HRforAll. That’s how we’ll all stay connected on Twitter during the chat.
