Should you be a Social Influencer or a Business Leader? Or Both?

Over the last several months, I’ve met with several business leaders who have asked how they can position themselves as an HR influencer. If you have similar questions on your mind, you’re in luck. I met with John Baldino, the founder and CEO of Humareso, to find out how he built his business and social influence over the last 7 years.

What attributes do you think makes you a successful business owner and HR consultant?

John: I believe I can cut to the heart of the matter relatively quickly. In business dealings with C-Suite leadership, it’s important to understand their perspective, but they are also looking for a peer to analyze the situation.  This has been a real help to our organization. Humareso is seen as a true business ally, even when we have to call leaders to the carpet. We’re transparent about it.

I think that my organization has brought itself forward as more than a transactional resource, but one that seeks to transform organizations. We’re relied upon heavily by companies across the country to assist with compliance and administration of human resources policy and best practice. That is a fantastic reality for us. And yet, those same companies are looking for more. We’re able to do both and that just deepens our supportive relationship with the client.

Are you successful in your business because you’re an influencer? Or are you an influencer because you’re a successful in your business?

John: For certain, my ability to influence comes from the work produced. When it’s the other way around, a professional runs the risk of being a talking head with no supportive body. Excellence in work speaks volumes and others want to know more.

Influence is allowed. What I mean is that people don’t sit around wanting to be influenced. They are not static beings hoping for someone to show them the way. People are dynamic, so when they deem someone worthy of attention, it should be met with willingness and humility. The privilege of being an influencer is not lost on me each day; I am acutely aware of my words, especially in my blogs and on social media. This nod to the work I am doing has to be met with gratitude and a willingness to share more. The influence I look to give will ultimately set others up for success. That’s what it should be about.

As a consultant, what are 3 things you do on social media that you think helps you build your business?

John: 1) Share great content – articles, blogs.

2) Share positive encouragement towards excellence in the work to be done – it’s not about being sappy, but rather it’s about being forward-thinking and pro-moving. Too often, what gets posted keeps thoughts in what was. We need to look at today and then move forward.

3) Be authentic. What I share on social media is me. There should not be any pretense.

What 3 things should emerging Influencers know about being an Influencer?

John: 1) Don’t seek to be an influencer. If it is meant, it will happen. Running after that kind of title (or buying it!) is not going to serve you well.

2) Get crap done. Work. Do great work. Earn your place by producing great stuff.

3) In some ways, titles can be temporary. Being an Influencer can be lost just as quickly as it’s gained. Know who you are and what your voice is trying to say. And keep your voice moving in that vein. Expand the levels of influence, but stay true to the core of what matters to you.

What advice do you have for new entrepreneurs who want to be influencers and grow their businesses?

John: As I’ve shared, my advice would be to work effectively. When people call me for help, they already have a sense of the work. They have read blogs, talked to clients, asked HR colleagues about me. They come in knowing that I might be a great fit. That’s influence. If you have a business to grow, tell the story of why you do what you do by doing what you do well. Share successes, reveal lessons learned during a misstep and brag on those who are supporting you.
