5 things I’m excited for at #SHRM17

Many folks are already at the SHRM 2017 Annual Conference. I’m on my way and can’t be more excited. Wondering what I’m looking forward to the most? Read below:
1. Seeing my #HR friends.

Virtual employment has many perks like no commute, spending time with 3 uncomfortable truths in HR rely on ethical leadershipmy pet all day, having a quiet workspace, being able to have ‘me time’ at lunch (like for cooking healthy food or taking naps!) But, the downside is I’m all alone, all day, every day. Sometimes, conferences like SHRM are the only times I interact with my coworkers or #HR peers for months as a time. I plan on taking advantage of this time. You should, too!

2. Meeting new people.

Big conferences like SHRM can be overwhelming. Recently, there’s been a lot of discussion about introverts in the workplace and at conferences. But, introverts aren’t the only folks with people limits or anxieties. Even though I’m an extrovert, and despite my name ‘Social Micole,’ I am really uncomfortable in large groups of people. I love being around a few close friends at a time for a quiet dinner. But, I feel really comfortable in 1on1 settings. The way I feel most comfortable meeting new people is by having current friends introduce me to new people. If you have some conference anxieties about networking in large groups, perhaps meeting some of your 2nd connections (friends of friends) may be a great place to start!

3. Hearing experts speak!

I’ve spent the past two years reading blog posts, listening to podcasts, working with, and even making friends with #HR bloggers. I LOVE any opportunity to hear the experts speak. I can’t wait to see Steve Browne, Sabrina Baker, Sharlyn Lauby, Jennifer Payne, Jason Lauritsen, and all our other speakers share their insights.

4. Buying all the AMAZING HR books at the SHRM Bookstore!

I’m especially excited for Mervyn Dinnen’s Exceptional Talent and Steve Browne’s HR on Purpose! Make sure to pick up your copy this week!

5. Experiencing New Orleans.

Fun fact: when I was in high school, I joined a ‘professional’ Marching Band as part of the Drum Corps International network. I traveled all over the country and performed in shows for thousands of people. One of the places we visited was New Orleans. Unfortunately, at drum corps, we were didn’t get the same freedom to “work AND play.” So, I never really experienced New Orleans the way I should have. I can’t wait to do some exploring. (What’s good? Share your favorite eats!)

If you’re at SHRM this week, I’d love to connect. Feel free to tweet me or visit me at @UltimateHCM’s Booth #2333 or the Relax and Recharge booth – to get a massage and charge your phone! See you soon!!
